To help a UK driver jailed abroad
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Fair Trials International advise drivers who are arrested to remain calm, and that also applies to their employers. It is a prisoner's right to insist that the British Consul be notified of his or her arrest.
Meanwhile, employers should contact the local British Consul or the FCO in London.
Remember that drivers also have a fundamental legal right to: • Be informed promptly in a language they understand of the reasons for the arrest and of any charges.
• Have adequate time and facilities for the preparation of a defence.
• Examine (or for a lawyer to examine) witnesses being called against them and to have witnesses appear on their behalf.
