that. compared with 1956. the total tonnage carried by German hauliers in the Federal Republic has increased hv 58 per cent, the tariff per tonikm. by 57 per cent, and gross revenue by 84 per cent. Road transport now moves 71 per cent of all goods traffic. whilst rail takes only 17 per cent.
In 1964 the number of vehicles engaged in transport for hire and reward was about 1.541M00 trucks and 82.040 trailers. In contrast. there were some 673.000 lorries and 246.11i111 trailers employed in transport on own account.
