ASPOKESMAN for Somerset County Council gave a fitm denial to the Western Traffic Commissioners at Taunton last Friday . that his authority was engaged in "a rearguard action" with the hope of preventing the closure of the Taunton-Barnstaple railway line.
The Commissioners were considering applications by the Western and Southern National Omnibus companies and Mr. W. H. M. Terraneau, of South Molton, for licences to run a new bus service front Taunton to Dulverton, then to South Molton, and to provide additional facilities from there to Barnstaple to cover the route the railway served.
Mr. W. Hunt, on behalf of Somerset County Council, and Mr. H. England, of Devon County Council, objected.
For the applicants, Mr. T. D. Corpc contended that the new service could be run over the existing pattern of roads without works having to be carried out.
Both County Council spokesmen stressed that, in their views, road works— many of a major nature--were essential if the bus route was to he run without causing congestion on the present roads.
