WEST MIDLANDS Passenger Transport Executive can afford to splice the mainbrace, thanks to two bus inspectors, Jim Evans and Kevin O'Reilly. They were concerned about the waste caused in discarding partially used rolls of tickets and set about making a hand-operated machine to splice and re-roll them.
Its success encouraged them to build a mechanised version from a sewing-machine motor and an old television stand. It has been treating 50 rolls a week and the inventors are now set to produce something even more professional.
If each of the West Midlands garages re-rolls only five rolls a week, the Executive could save £25,000 a year, says Bob Dimmock, area manager.
