THE FIRST PAY deal for more than four years for hire-andreward drivers in Scotland will see their overtime earnings boosted by 10%.
The basic hourly rate of £7 will j ump 3.5% under the Scottish joint industrial council (JIC) agreement between the Road Haulage Association and the Transport & General Workers Union.
Regional RI-IA director Phil Flanders explains that overtime rates are rising so sharply because they were frozen in the last agreement.
"When we negotiated the last deal four-and-ahalf years ago we had the Working Time Directive in mind and did not think people would have much opportunity for overtime," he says.
"We did not reckon that periods of availability would be excluded from the 48-hour week."
Under the deal, which is being backdated to April, the union and the RHA will campaign jointly for a cut in fuel duty and a significant reduction in delays at distribution centres.
T&G regional industrial organiser Tony Trench says that achieving these objectives will help persuade hauliers to agree to the union's target of £10 an hour for all drivers because their running costs will be lower.
