1-1 A RECENT survey conducted by 1REJ shows that Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Western Germany maintain a complete prohibition on heavy goods vehicle traffic on Sundays and public holidays. In Austria the prohibition applies from 3 p.m. on Saturdays to midnight on Sundays, and the following are the recognized public holidays: January 1, January 6, Good Friday, Easter Monday. May 1, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, Corpus Christi, August 15. November 1. December 8, 25 and 26.
The Italian authorities ban the passage of goods transport vehicles of more than 5 tons total laden weight from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays, and also on Easter Monday, May Day and December 25.
In Germany the position is more complicated as the question of public holidays varies according to the various Lander of the Federal Republic and also according to the religion (Protestant or Catholic) of the district.
Certain restrictions are also operated in France in respect of goods vehicles of more than Mons total laden weight. There is no general prohibition on Sundays and public holidays except as regards the autoroutes du Sud et de l'Ouest.
The general effect of the restrictions is such that British hauliers would be advised to avoid using these autoroutes out of or into Paris on Friday nights, -Saturday afternoons, Sundays and public holidays. On the Route Nationale No. 7. between Corbel' and Paris, goods traffic of similar weight is prohibited on Sundays and public holidays from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. in both directions.
