• A Scottish brewer has uprated its fleet from 32.5 to 38 tonnes GCW with no fuel consumption penalty, and its fleet engineer believes that most of the credit should go to speed limiters.
Alloa Brewery Company's seven Cummins LTA 10-290engined, twin-steer ERF tractive units have been fitted with Romatic System 90 road speed limiters for about six months.
Average fuel consumption, according to fleet engineer Roy Marrison, is 36.7 lit/1001mi (7.7mpg). Typical delivery points for the Alloa Brewery fleet range from Aberdeen in the north, to the north-east and north-west of England in the south.
The company uses a Romatic TCU (test calibration unit) kept at its Alloa workshop to check the operation of the limiters at each major service.
