• Changes in road lighting policy announced by Roads and Traffic Minister Peter Bottomley this week could lead to a considerable increase in lighting installations on Britain's trunk roads and motorways.
Until now all new lighting installations have been assessed against a payback period of 12 months. Under the new policy, Bottomley has increased the payback period to that of the full life of the road (30 years), thus spreading the capital cost of the installation over a far longer period.
The other major change in Lighting policy for Britain's trunk roads and motorways is a decision to include all lighting proposals in the public consultations process for any new roads.
