• A West Bromwich firm where a truck driver was killed 18 months ago is to face trial in the new year. Haulier John Payne, from Cumbria, died in June last year at European Metal Recycling, in Kelvin Way, when he was run over by a reversing vehicle.
A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive says the firm is facing a charge under the Health and Safety at Work Act; the case is scheduled to be heard at Wolverhampton Crown Court on 7 February.
"We understand the company is denying the charge and the case is scheduled to last a week," says the spokesman. "Our allegation is that the firm failed to adequately safeguard the safety of an outside employee.
"It was a tragic accident," he adds. "Mr Payne suffered multiple injuries."
