WM Armstrong (Longtown) WM Armstrong (Longtcwn) installed a Britannia Strong/Spray 50 vehicle wash from Smith Bros & Webb just over two years ago at a cost of over £70,000, It is a brush rollover machine that's equipped with accessories that make it more appropriate for the wide range of vehicles in a 90-strong fleet that includes livestock trailers, tankers, tippers and curtainsiders. The accessories include pivoting spray bars on the chemical and rinse arches, in combination with a Jetspray 2 drive-through, under chassis wash. The supplier says the combination is ideal for mixed fleets, including irregular shaped vehicles. The design is highly effective in delivering detergent and water under pressure to any part of the vehicle, including areas where normal brush contact wouldn't be possible.
According to WM Armstrong director Derek Armstrong, the investment has already paid for itself. "We push the drivers to use it as often as they can to keep the image of the company clean, so they go though it at least once a week, but sometimes it can be up to four times a week," he says. "It's worth the investment in time alone. If you had to brush a curtainsider or a livestock vehicle, it would take you a couple of hours. With this, they can do it in 10 minutes and the vehicles are out working."
The Castleford LPW Group The Castleford LPVV Group site is typical of the independent approach to fleet washing. Its centres are strategically located to service both local and national customers who may use a different centre every time. This enables an image to be maintained wherever the vehicles are, without having to get back to a specific base.
Facilities are located close to motorway intersections and in busy industrial/distribution areas. They are ideal for operators with no onsite systems, or if a midweek wash is required when the vehicle is up the road.
The Castleford truck wash centre is staffed by up to five trained operators who provide 'detail cleaning of areas inaccessible to the brush wash (ie under-chassis members, under wheel arches, cab backs and trailer/box fronts). Fast turnarounds are achieved as the team prepares the next vehicle in line while the first one is being completed. if a brush wash cannot be used (eg car transporters, tankers) mobile truck wash units are available.
