• "Never again will it be possible for a normal size boat built in the North East to be shown at the Boat Show. The cost of taking it there under the abnormal loads tax would be prohibitive. Even to transport a boat to a port for export will incur a penal tax.So said the Conservative MP for Moray and Nairn, Mr. Gordon Campbell, speaking on the evils of the Transport Bill in Aberdeen on Friday.
He forecast that consumers in the South would find their fish less fresh, but more expensive, because of the impediments to fast and efficient service.
Transport scholarships
• The Institute of Transport is inviting applications for awards available for study and research in subjects connected with road transport. The Henry Spurrier Memorial Fund has 500 available, the Sir William Chamberlain Memorial Fund up to £200, while the R HA travelling scholarship (value £200) is available for the first time, to assist a candidate engaged in UK public road haulage to travel overseas.

• The Albert Hall has been booked by the R for its "climacteric" freedom rally in London on May 23. Other rally dates are: Nottingham (Feb. 14), Birmingham (Mar. 4), Southampton (Mar. 5), Aberdeen (Mar. 11), Bristol (Mar. 25), Leeds (April 18).
