AThe former has a number of advantages: they include lower first cost and weight, together with higher efficiency.
However, some makers still prefer a crownwheel-and-pinion drive because it has a longer life and withstands shock stresses better. If the secondary reduction gearing is located in the hubs then the stress on the half shaft is reduced so that tighter shafts can be employed.
