• A Commons debate on the road haulage industry, including lorry routes and vehicle weights, is being sought by Mr James Hill, Conservative MP for Southampton, Test.
He has tabled a motion for debate on February 12 but time will be short and the motion may be squeezed out. Mr James's prime objective is to draw attention to the growing importance of Southampton as an international and European seaport and he urges the Government to give the goahead for a full motorway system to link it with the Midlands and London.
But his motion also calls for maximum retention of British Rail freight services and for steps to insure that heavy lorries are diverted on to motorways.
Mr James suggests that all lorries of 9 tons axle weight, 32 tons gross weight should be banned from any road other than an approved motorway or major link. road.
