OPPONENTS of bus deregulation point to the dangers of competition eroding profits to the extent that many existing systems collapse.
They make reference to the days before regulation was introduced in 1931, and there is some evidence in Kilmarnock's Trams and Buses (NB Traction Group, £2.55) in which Alan Brotchie and Robert Grieves chronicle the development of a municipal transport service in the West of Scotland.
Competition from buses proved to be the instrument of final demise for the trams which had already had their profits eroded by efforts to squeeze down fares, and the rapid growth of the railwayowned Scottish Motor Traction group was to lead the council to sell its buses to SMT.
The book contains many period illustrations of trams and buses in the town and is a companion to other books published on forgotten Scottish transport systems.
