A SMALL independently chaired body to review some aspects of traffic law and to promote road safety and efficient traffic management is being set up by Transport Secretary Nicholas Ridley.
Mr Ridley told MPs last week: "We hope that the review body, which will invite evidence from interested parties, will be able to report on these matters next year."
Reckless and careless driving penalties will be considered and whether the present penalty points system needs any amendment.
The body will also study the structure and penalties for other traffic offences such as failure to comply with traffic signs, and the wider application of statutory driving tests for certain types of offences.
Dr Peter North, principal of Jesus College, Oxford, is to be chairman and Professor of Transport Studies from the University College, London, Richard Allsop, is the second outside member.
