SPECIALLY devised to supply lubricating oil in large quantities to aircraft using London Airport, a new tanker has recently been put into service by the Vacuum Oil Co., Ltd. Based on a Morris-Commercial 25-cwt. chassis, the vehicle contains two 125-gallon tanks fitted with built-in dip-rods. At the rear of the tanker, however, is a Wayne-Smith meter reading down to 1/10 gallon, by which deliveries to aircraft are measured.
A Varley DH 20 double-helical gcat pump with an adjustable relief valve feeds oil through 45 ft. of 1-in.-bore hose directly into the aircraft sump. A trigger nozzle enables the driver, unaided, to discharge the lubricant, the rate varying from 7 g.p.m. at maximum r.p.m. in winter to 12-15 g.p.m. in summer.
• A bout-way change-over valve enables the driver to feed oil into the aircraft in the normal way or to use outside suction to refill the vehicle tank. Outside suction may also be used to feed oil into the aircraft, by-passing the tanker, and the driver can drain the hose and pump ,by pumping back into the vehicle tank.
