Sunderland's 'Yes for One-man System
ONE-MAN buses and fiat fares for all routes were approved—in principle —by Sunderland Corporation transport committee last week. The proposed system, including the use of prepurchased tokens and automatic tokenoperated ticket machines, was outlined in "The Commercial Motor" of April 9 and the implications discussed in our issue of April 23.
The decision to go ahead was reached following consideration of a report from a recent delegation to Copenhagen to inspect a similar system there, and the earlier, published report of Mr. Norman Morton, general manager, '4A modern transport system for Sunderland". A detailed report will now be compiled after talks with those concerned about the effects of the implementation of the system.
Deeper in the Red
Meanwhile the department recorded a net loss of £52,148 in the year ended 1964/5— double that of the previous year, despite the fact that traffic receipts had increased by more than £10,000 to a total of £951,498. The deficit will be transferred to the general rate fund; a similar move last year resulted in the stabilizing not only of fares, but also of the number of passengers carried, arresting the steady decline of the previous fise years.
