AS has been announced in 111te, C ontmercial Motor, an important meeting of the committee of the Commercial Motor Users Association was held a few days ago in London. with the object of discussing some of the problems which motorbus and motor-coach -operators are having to face under the new. conditions of licensing. Several points were dealt with, and, regarding some of them, of which details are given below, the association is making representation to the Minister of Transport.

The possible compulsory fitting of speedometers to public-service vehicles is considered by the association an unnecessary and undesirable' measure, on the grounds that such instruments are expensive to install and maintain and not 'always to be relied upon ; also effective speedometers cannot be fitted to some existing vehicles.

It is considered that frequent conferences of the Traffic Commissioners ought to be held with the object of obtaining a uniformity of procedure, the time thus occupied being well justified by the reduction in the number of operators' appeals which, it is thought, would result.

Another point is that of speeding up the granting of drivers' licences, it being considered that the procedure as at present afforded is by no means easy or expeditious, particularly in cases where, as the result of illness, etc., it is necessary to obtain at short notice spare drivers who are duly qualified. It is suggested that an arrangement should he made by which provisional licences could be quickly granted.

As regards excursions and tours of the kind in which the same load of passengers is carried by a vehicle throughout its journey for an inclusive fare, whole of the route without more ado.

Another recommendation is that Commissioners should endeavour to group more thoroughly the hearings of applications emanating from the same place, particularly those relating to the of fitness. In cases where a mutually convenient appointment cannot ke arranged between the officers and the vehicle proprietors, at least a week's notice of intention to inspect vehicles should be given by the officers.
