TRANSPORT operators in Aberdeen were warned last week that the EEC drivers hours "honeymoon" period during which regulations had not been rigidly enforced would end in June, Jack Welsh, Scottish regional controller of the Freight Transport Association told about 60 north-east operators that they had only a few weeks left to conform to the new rules before they faced the full force of the law.
He said three main areas needed immediate attention — reduction of total weekly driving from 60 to 57 hours; reduction of the fortnightly driving maximum from 120 to 112 hours; and extension of the weekly rest period from 24 to 35 hours.
At a seminar in Aberdeen, Mr Welsh also warned that from December 1, the daily driving limit would be reduced from ten to nine and a half hours. After January 1, there would be enforcement of the 281-miles-a-day rule unless vehicles were double manned or fitted with tachographs.
