• Shropshire County Council is poised to crack down on livestock hauliers who flout an 18. month-old law by transporting sheep in open-top trucks.
It has just successfully prosecuted a Welsh truck operator for subjecting sheep to the elements and the possibility of being hit by overhanging trees. David Robert Daniel Bebb of Llangadfan in Welshpool was fined 1500 and ordered to pay £125 legal costs.
Hauliers can no longer be excused for causing the sheep "unnecessary distress" by claiming ignorance of the law, says the council.
