fFIE UNITED Road Transport inion has urged caution over the )ossible introduction of 60-tonne :rucks onto UK roads.
A formal application for trials to ;tart will be made at the next Road Haulage Forum by the Road Haulige Association.
URTU general secretary Bob VIonks supports the trials in princi but has three primary concerns: 'The question of health and safety Df the drivers of these vehicles is paramount. The amount of skill md concentration that will be required will increase sharply."
Monks believes professional irivers should be -properly :rained to drive such vehicles and lave a minimum of two years' verifiable experience driving 44tonne vehicles before embarking on training and being allowed onto UK roads".
He also wants drivers of 60tonne vehicles to be properly rewarded, as the drivers will be extremely well qualified. "Operators will be reaping the rewards of running such vehicles with improved fuel costs per mile/ tonne and reduced VED payments," he says. "The driver too should rightly enjoy some monetary premium for undertaking the driving of these vehicles."
