TRANSPORT Secretary Nicholas Ridley has warned London Regional Transport that he expects to see rapid improvements in its bus maintenance.
Outlining ERT's response to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission Report on its bus and maintenance arrangements, Ridley said he had had cause for "serious concern" about the standards of buses as a result of spot inspections since ERT's initial response last October.
But its latest response contained some encouraging evi
dt.trl CC of a significant improvement in recent months, he said.
"This does not, however, niean that the standard of performance being achieved is yet satisfactory, and I expect to see further improvement at an early stage."
Ridley also said he is unhappy at the slow progress being made by LRT in modifying its complex industrial relations structure.
In its response, LRT said that it had prepared proposals for a revised management structure. for garage engi neering maintenance, but that implementation depended on the introduction of a negotiating machinery which reflected more accurately the revised structure of LRT and the negotiation on new grading and salary structure.
The bulk of the savings envisaged are dependent on changes in the negotiating machinery, LRT told Ridley.
He expected to see "substantial progress" by ERT, but progress had so far been limited and he is keen to see formal evidence of progress.
