0 n Ireland you don't have to visit the country's galleries to see great works of art. The Republic is in the middle of a major road building programme which has seen 20 major and minor roads constructed over the past two years, and a government scheme ensures that every time a road is built it's accompanied by a new work of art. The latest example can been seen on the Dundalk bypass and is the work of local artist Miceal 14IcKenown. It's a 6m-high stainless-steel sculpture of the first great Irish warrior, Cuchulainn, who, legend has it, had his fort in Dundalk. It would not be a bad thing if roadside art caught on in the UK, if only to cool the tempers of motorists caught on yet another gridlock on the M25.
