SCOTTISH Secretary George Younger is "not very keen" on setting a deadline for the introduction of the road equivalent tariff on West Coast and Northern Isles ferries.
He explained to the Commons last week that the Government had moved a long way towards R ET, as it undertook to do before the 1979 general election.
There were many different views about what would be the best form of RET, said Mr Younger. Some areas thought they might gain, while others thought they might not gain so much. The answers had to be got right before the matter was finalised.
The grant had been more than doubled in cash terms, pointed out Mr Younger, and stood at £10.6m, which was a great advance.
