Gilbert of Voith Engineering for providing the opportunity to expand on my article "Synthetic Solutions" (CM, March 22).
In the space available, it was not possible to cover all the designs Of retarder, but we are, of course, aware of them.
At Silkolene Lubricants, we are heavily involved in developments which include synthetic fluids for several transmission applications.
As it is our practice to carry out extensive field trials before marketing products, such testing has been in progress for over three years with several selected customers on specific retarder fluids and advanced gearbox lubricants.
Turning to the particular question of a synthetic fluid being developed as a common automatic transmission fluid, this is quite feasible from the fluid point of view, but the variety of friction materials built in to the transmissions has a greater effect than the fluid.
We are mindful of the objectives and will ensure that Silkolene technology is at the forefront of synthetic fluid developments.
