Adam Purshall is contract manager in a company that employs 400 people and runs 200 vehicles.
The potential cost of training and implementing digital tachographs in a company this size could be crippling. As a result, says Purshall, TM Logistics has already devised a strategy that involves renewing some of its sizeable fleet before the inevitable lastminute rush to beat the digital deadline.
"As a business, we want to avoid introducing digital tachographs for as long as we can. So we will be making a lot of vehicle purchases earlier in the financial year because we believe there is going to be a big rush (for new trucks) when they actually set the final date."
With the company running trucks for an average six to seven years before renewal, the digital tachograph problem could be postponed for some time. By then, Purshall hopes, any teething troubles will have been ironed out.
"We have an ageing workforce and with more and more technology coming in, it is hard to get people trained to do everything," he says.
