A staff driver who makes a weekly run tc Germany, John Hunt claims drivers are starved of information about digital tacho. graphs and most are completely unaware they will need a smart card,
"Very few drivers I speak to are aware of the digital tachograph at all. A lot of them, especially the older ones, are expecting their companies to pay for the cards," he says.
"Those that do know something about it are still unaware as to when they will need a card. what it will do, how it will work and what information it will record.
"I see this new technology as another nail in the coffin, causing even more drivers to become fed up with the ever-rising cost of doing our job and leave the industry for better-paid, more respectable employment.
"It is a burden upon the industry. Were not just looking at the cost of the cards here; the new technology is going to be a massive financial headache for many people.
"I would like to suggest the money from the sale of smart cards goes towards buying colouring books and crayons for the Members of the European Parliament that have nothing better to do than meddle in things they have very little knowledge or understanding of
