WEST MIDLANDS Police are scaling down Operation Indicate, its truck crime division.
Steve Tolley, industrial liaison officer at Operation Indicate, has been moved off the project, leaving a hole in the division's team.
Andy Round, intelligence officer for Operation Indicate, claims Tolley's departure is unlikely to affect the division's capability — but he accepts it could damage operators' confidence in the initiative: "Steve used to go out and visit hauliers, nationally and locally.
"He went to meetings, and was a face-to-face contact, Round adds, "It could affect industry perception of the operation:' Chrys Rampley, manager of security for the RHA, has written to express disappointment. She adds: "I think this will have a major impact. The particular officer was very good and confidence in the operation was growing. The question now is: who will actually go out and arrest people?"
Operation Indicate vvaslaunched in June 2005 and succeeded in slashing truck crime in the Black Country,a theft black spot, by 51% in its first year of operation.
