THE RECOMMENDATION by the working party on the reorganisation of the Road Haulage Association that the Northern district should be abolished and divided between the North Western and Yorkshire districts should surprise and disturb no one. It is entirely logical.
The former. Northern area (now district) owed its awkward geography to the corresponding traffic area, which ignored the central obstacle of the Pennines, a hazard in winter and an inconvenience at any time. To keep in close touch with members in, say, Barrow-in Furness from Newcastle upon Tyne, more than 100 difficult . miles away, has never been simple for Denis Le Conte, the district manager, whereas the North Western office in Bolton (formerly in Manchester) is easily accessible to hauliers west of the Pennines.
The creation of a North Eastern district to amalgamate the present Yorkshire district with the dismembered Northern district is a sensible concomitant, both geographically and financially. Far from being apprehensive the members affected should welcome the proposal, which in the long run is bound to serve their best interests.
Noel Wynn, who has completed his second stint in 16 years as chairman of a reorganisation working party, will go down in the Associations' annals as perhaps its greatest reformer, and benefactor.
