I was interested to read (CM, July 28) the story of Harry Cawthorne's firm Majestic Motors of Darton. Some years ago my company, on the coach side, had dealings with them, when we operated coaches.
I feel, however, I must challenge Malcolm Cawthorne's remark that they have "saved a fortune by not being members of any Associations."
I feel sure that he will appreciate, and readily accept, that if'it were not for the efforts of both paid staff and willing members of both the Road Hauage Association and the Confederation of British Road Passenger Transport, his position might not be as happy as it appears to be today.
Over the years both these energetic trade associations have fought many battles and as a result of their endeavours there are many operators in the field of transport who receive all the benefits, although they do not contribute with either effort or money towards the Associations who do so much for them.
All operators know of the difficulties we are all experiencing today from very many different angles and I am sure it is absolutely vital for the road transport industry as a whole that we have strong and viable trade associations. I would urge all operators, whether they be on the goods or passenger side, to join their representative trade associations now and add strength to the discussions, arguments and debates that are surely still to come.
