• A controversial arbitration method, intended to avoid strikes, is being used for the first time in the UK vehicle industry at Luton-bised van rnanfacturer IBC.
The pendulum arbitration mechanism allows a middle man to rule between management's final offer and the worker's last claim. Both sides must agree that the arbitrator's decision will be legally binding.
The method has already been used once to decide whether workers should be entitled to claim days off in lieu if they fall sick during holidays. The arbitrator decided for the unions. Despite this, Barry Thomas of IBC says the mechanism works well.
