Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

rtA VALVE ' lifter for overhead-valve engines, operated by a treadle, is the latest tool in the Lightning range produced by The Elms Garage, Red nal Road, Birmingham, 31. A comparatively light pressure on the foot lever depresses the spring, and both the mechanic's hands are left free for the removal of keys or cotters. It is claimed that the 12 valves of a sixcylindered engine can be stripped in a little over two minutes.

The jaws take the form of L pieces, the two vertical arms having a bolt-andslot sliding action which maintains the clamping arms parallel. Operation is by means of a special type of cable, which does not tend to straighten the casing. The pedal stirrup pivots around the point of attachment and a straight pull is ensured.

The upper jaw is fitted with a variable-width U-shaped insert, controlled by a wing nut, which can be adjusted for any size of spring, A small bolt of prin. diameter is used, and this acts as a shear pin to prevent damage to the jaws should undue force be applied to the lever. The insert may, if necessary, be withdrawn to permit a special-purpose tool to be fitted in its place.

The price of the Lightning valve lifter is £5.
