itORK on the Greatham diversion scheme on the A689 in County Durham—the first of the special schemes included in the Government's £50m. road programme for the North East—was inagurated by the Minister of Transport last week. By the autumn of next year, work is expected to start on at least six other schemes, costing in all some £13m.
Mr. Marples described the Greatham scheme as the beginning of an additional programme which recognized that good roads were vital to the economic development of the region. The new, mile-long dual carriageway by-pass would improve considerably the vital traffic flow between Hartlepools and the trunk roads Al9 and Al.
