After serving an apprenticeship with the East Surrey Traction Company, Mr. Burford worked at various country area garages and became technical assistant to the superintendent of rolling stock in 1936. From 1938 to 1957 he served as a garage engineer and a district engineer in the central area. He became executive assistant to the divisional engineer (central buses) "A " division, and in 1960 was made assistant divisional engineer with the rank of senior executive assistant. He was transferred to the country area in 1961.
