• The Government has been asked to allow the cost of travel between home and work to be offset against income tax by an MP who considers that it could stimulate the use of public transport, thereby halting the circle of fewer passengers paying higher fares, and contribute towards a lessening of congestion on the roads.
The request has been made by Mr Robert Taylor, Conservative, Croydon NorthWest, he disclosed in a speech to Young Conservatives in his constituency.
Mr Taylor has put forward the proposal as "an act of fairness and a concrete way in which to end a grievance and to give relief to that section of the community so savagely hit by rising transport costs".
