THE first 10 in a new series of British Standards for the automobile industry have just been issued by the B.S.I. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which up to now has issued standards for this industry, has been co-operating closely with the B.S.I. to prepare the conversion of some 150 existing S.M.M.T. specifications covering, for example, wheels, engine and chassis components, electrical and lighting equipment.
All the standards in the new series are being printed as leaflets on distinctive yellow paper and stiff binders for filing them will also be available. The B.S. numbers for the series will all carry the prefix "AU " to assist easy reference.
Standards published in the new series include, B.S. AU 1: 1963, Dimensions of 2-2i in. diameter fifth-wheel king pin for use with semi-trailers; B.S. AU 2: 1963, Dimensions of 31-41 in. diameter fifth-wheel king pin for use with extra heavy duty semi-trailers: B.S. AU 3: 1963, Position and heights for fifth-wheel attachment; B.S. AU 4: 1963, Dimensions of the palm type coupling for use with pressure braking systems on trailers and semi-trailers; B.S. AU 5: 1963, Dimensions of " contact " type couplings for vacuum and pressure braking systems on trailers and semi-trailers; B.S. AU 6: 1963, Dimensions of engine mounting pads for distributor securing levers. The four other standards cover vehicle electrical equipment
Copies of all the standards are obtainable from the B.S.I. Sales Branch, 2 Park Street,London, W.1, at prices varying from Is. 6d. to 3s.
