" NEW and often uninformed competi
tion " in the supply of castings to the motor industry was mentioned on Tuesday by the Marquess of Exeter, chairman of Birmid industries, Ltd., at the company's annual meeting.
Because of the recession in many branches of engineering, he said, manufacturers of castings whet had not previously catered for the motor industry sought to employ their vacant capacity in that direction. Although the casting section of Birmid industries retained a high level of activity, the increased competition had caused a downward trend in prices and margins.
The Marquess spoke gravely of the effect of the wage increase for engineering employees which came into effect on October 6. but added: "Possibly, however. the growing tendency to unofficial strikes is the greatest single menace to the interest of emp14ees and employers alike in the engineering industry."
