HAULIERS are becoming more and more "Continental minded." Hardly a day now seems to pass in the traffic courts without some mention being made of future operations in connection with the Continent. Two cases have recently come before the Metropolitan Deputy Licensing Authority concerning the carriage of goods destined for Holland and other countries, and evidence was given that A-licensed rigid vehicles were "not allowed on the Continent." The Authority was told that an operator had to use a certain type of trailer to comply with the various regulations in force on the Continent. He had to accept the statements without corroboration.
At the moment there appears to be no set formula for carrying loads over the Channel—each individual movement has to be dealt with on its merits and, in general, operators have to rely on the excellent services of their trade associations, who have to laboriously compile information.
We were told by Mr. Hay (at the R.H.A. conference last October) that a department has been set up within the Ministry to consider these matters: certainly as much information as possible is needed.
