T°'prove the distribution of coal to industrial and domestic consumers in Sheffield and district, Burnett and Hallamshire Fuel, Ltd., have installed mechanical coal-handling plant at their Nunnery depot, Sheffield.
It can handle an intake of 60 rail wagons of coal per day, plus lorry loads brought from opencast sites in Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire. f we've of the storage bunkers are designed to gravityload lorries in bulk, and a further eight are equipped to load into bags at 16 points. Bags are filled on a bank level with the lorry platforms.
Mr. J. C. Wood, joint managing director of the company, said that the new plant had eliminated almost all manual work, yet nobody had been dismissed. On the contrary, extra men had been engaged and higher wages would he paid.
