THE GOVERNMENT has revised its lorry traffic forecasts for the rest of the century, and lorry traffic could decline.
According to the Department of Transport, previous forecasts of a 23 to 39 per cent growth in lorry traffic were too high. It is not expected to grow by more than eight per cent, and it could drop by four per cent.
This revision in the figure for lorry mileage takes account of a lower expected rate of industrial production, and a greater switch to maximum capacity lorries to increase vehicle productivity.
But the Freight Transport Associqtion points out that the new figures should be treated with caution as lorry mileage is not an accurate measure of industrial performance.
It calculates that the tonnekm figure, which takes account of the loads carried in vehicles, will continue to rise by between 21 and 33 per cent over the same period.
