the increase have been confirmed by the Department of Transport's latest quarterly road accidents bulletin.
In the first quarter of this year there was a 23% rise in the number of road traffic deaths involving goods vehicles, compared with the same period a year earlier.
Altogether 48 people were killed in accidents involving goods vehicles. A further 514 were seriously injured, a reduction of 7% on the same period a year earlier, indicating that more accidents ended in fatalities.
During the same period, there was a 14% fall in the number of people killed in bus or coach related accidents. There were six who died in such accidents during the first quarter and altogether bus and coach related injuries fell by 10%.
Road traffic increased by 5% compared with the same period a year earlier and total road traffic deaths increased by 4%.
