• Since early this year, Gypsum Industries Ltd., Ireland, has been employing large capacity tipping artics in place of 22-ton-gross rigid six-wheel tippers at its mine near Kingscourt, Co. Cavan, some 50 miles from Dublin.
Hauled by Mercedes four-wheel tractive units, the 32-ton-gross artics have 2ft 4inhigh alloy bodies built in Dublin by Griffith J. Roberts Ltd. and raised on 30ft-long Fromant semi-trailers by Edbro front-end tipping gears, three of them with 7CAN twin-ram gears and the other with an 82SB single ram. These 22-ton-payload outfits have replaced five rigids with 14-ton payloads.
The single-ram gear is operated from the Mercedes engine via an Edbro pump and power take-off, the twin-ram gears being powered by a Tamplin pack on the semitrailers.
All the outfits are used to carry raw gypsum from the mine at Drumgoosett. Some 2,800 tons a week are transported to the plasterboard factory at Kingscourt 7+ miles away, and nearly 2,000 tons a week is moved to the port of Dundalk from where it is shipped to Glasgow and Plymouth.
The single-ram artic normally feeds the factory on a round-the-clock three-shift basis, averaging 21 loads in 24 hours. This unit has a higher-powered Mercedes 1923 tractor and is better able than the others—all Mercedes 1418 models—to tackle a fairly steep climb on the road from the mine to Kingscourt. The rest of the fleet is normally employed on the 20-mile run to Dundalk.
