Trick Revived FOR years past, motor traders and :operators have been, from time to time, calight by what we may term a " confidence " scheme, which we have, on occasions, referred to as the. "jointing or gasket trick," and we earnestly warn all our readers to beware of this or other catches of a similar nature.
What frequently happens is that a traveller, either a man or a woman, visits, usually, a branch service depot and asks if the people there are interested in packing or jointing. The traveller is generally informed that only small quantities are required. He or she then remarks that the jointing concern represented has, perhaps, some special line in small pieces, or material of a special quality, and, quite often, succeeds in persuading a customer to agree to take a small quantity at so much per pound.
The order is then made out for, per haps, so many squares and is signed in good faith by the customer. Sometimes the size of the squares themselves or their number is not inserted, and, in others, the figures may be rather indistinct and require close observation to read, or the definite figure inserted may be quite different from the amount required. Instead, therefore, of an account for a few shillings, that which eventually arrives may be for many pounds, and, in some cases, the customer finds himself in possession of jointing sufficient to last him almost a lifetime. The return of the surplus is refused and full payment demanded.
