Conditions in Afghanistan are so arduous that the average commercial vehicle is shaken to pieces in a matter a months, yet it is for such conditions as these that Bedfords are designed. Their durability and economical running are the direct result of the Vauxhall Motors policy of designing vehicles especially for export.
The success of this, policy is shown by the immediate popularity of the make upon its introduction. Although produced by one of England's oldest private-car factories, Bedford vehicles are comparatively new, yet in a few years they have attained such popularity that they have won a premier position In this country and in the export field.
Bedford design is not based entirely upon the experience
of exporting to all parts of the world, but also upon the most useful knowledge that is gained from the proving grounds. The engineers start by designing a vehicle with ample reserves of strength for abnormal conditions, and then produce experimental models to these specifications. The design is then put to the extreme test by sending these vehicles to the testing areas, where they are driven hard over the worst roads they can ever meet in service.
These tests are exceedingly severe, and any weak points in the design soon manifest themselves. It is not until the engineers are completely satisfied with the final modified design that production of a new model can proceed, and the chassis models that eventually leave the assembly lines embody all improvements resulting from the trials. Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., claims "engineering leadership' for its products, and with such an extensive engineering organization, employing most thorough methods, the claim. is well justified. Its fruits are to be seen in the very large share which its products take in the export market.
