'THE first of a new series of refrigerated J. vehicles has been added to its meathandling fleet by Louis C. Edwards and Sons (Manchester), Ltd. It is a 1,000cu.-ft. Leyland-Scammell articulated unit employed in the delivery of meat and frozen packs to the docks, returning with consignments of meat from Liverpool, London, Newport and Bristol.
The Comet tractor has Scammell automatic coupling gear. The steel-panelled body is by Mann Egerton and Co., Ltd.,. of Norwich, and has aluminium internal walls and light-alloy chequerboard flooring.
Cooling is by a Frigidaire AD5 refrigeration unit driven by a Vincent petrol engine, both housed below floor level. Alternatively, the system can be operated from the mains supply.
The body is insulated by a 6-in, layer of Onozote between , the walls. The temperature is maintained bet w e en -10° F. and -14° F. Payloads handled often weigh upto 12 tons, and the outfit is returning an average fuel-consumption rate of 10 m.p.g.
Mr. John Peel, the company's transport manager, has stated that the new outfit is doing the job of two normal refrigerated vans.
