Strolling along a London street on referendum polling day I was intrigued to see a large commercial vehicle liberally bedecked with large red balloons. The colour couldn't have been significant, because its posters urged the citizens of London to cask their vote in favour of European membership.
Before this became apparent, however, my colleague and I had spent some moments guessing the purpose of the balloons, and came to the conclusion that they were a cunning device intended to so reduce the weight of the vehicle that the operator could avoid employing an hgv driver, claim he was eligible for a lower road fund licence fee, and carry more goods.
The truth came as rather a let-down.
