I WOULD LIKE to notify yourself and the readers of Commercial Motor, that a meeting of hauliers from the south-east of England was convened on Thursday 29 April 2004 to discuss the ever increasing cost of road fuel.
During the meeting, those present expressed their concern as to the level that fuel prices are currently running at and to where they might end up by August of this year, bearing in mind the haulage industry has been forewarned of a fuel tax increase for the start of September 2004.
The meeting was also attended by several farmers from the south-east, who, in turn, commented on the current rise in agricultural fuel costs This equated to a 59% increase in duty. Both hauliers and farmers agreed that the increases were detrimental to business.
On behalf of the hauliers from the south-east of England, I have been asked to present this letter to your editor for its publication.
Trusting that you are able to undertake this, I thank you most sincerely. Name withheld South East Hauliers Group
