• A new three-axled tractive unit intended mainly for export has been developed by Seddon Motors Ltd in co-operation with the Primrose Third Axle Co Ltd.
The unit, designated the 34:Six, is suitable for gross weights up to 34 tons and is converted by Primrose from a longwheelbase two-axle tractive unit supplied from Seddon.
The single tyred 6-ton axle is selfsteering and is installed just in front of the driving axle. Wheelbase of the tractive unit is lift 8in. Air suspension is used for the second steering axle which varies the spring stiffness automatically according to the load being carried. In addition, extra weight can be put on the driving axle by temporally exhausting the air from the suspension units. The conversion adds about 1-.ton to the unladen weight of the vehicle.
Power is normally provided by a RollsRoyce 220 bhp engine with transmission through a Fuller nine-speed gearbox and Seddon double reduction driving axle.
