• Over 100 hauliers from the London area decided on Monday to instruct their drivers to cross the dockers' picket lines at docks and depots. Nearly 160 members of the Metropolitan and South Eastern area of the Road Haulage Association, representing 110 firms and 7500 employees, were present at a special meeting to discuss the container and docks situation.
The RHA national chairman ancU,lrts committee chairman, Mr John Wells, said some hauliers were in such a desperate situation that they had already instructed their drivers to cross the lines.
Area chairman Mr John Silbermann said the meeting had been called because of the urgent requests from members for guidance. The problem was of national importance and unless the activities of dock workers were checked they would inevitably spread and involve a larger section of the haulage industry.
