Transport Commission, submitted that there was no prima facie case, because Pickfords' heavy-haulage depots had 15 similar vehicles in the area which were not fully employed.
Alsager was only 25 to 30 miles away from two heavy-haulage centres at Manchester and Stafford, and there had been no suggestion from the applicant's witnesses that the objectors could not meet the requirements. Mr. Barker and his witnesses appeared to have scant knowledge of abnormal loads.
Mr. Dunkerley suggested that Pickfords changed their ideas according to whether they were applicants or objectors. Associated companies were willing to employ Barkers, as there was no low-loader within 15 miles of Alsager.
Mr. Lindsay said the application fell far short of the requirements for a grant for outside customers. He would confirm the short-term B-licence, granted to carry for the applicant's associated companies—Barker's Plant Hire (Alsager), Ltd., and James Barker and Co., Ltd.
